2019 Southern Living Idea House
For their 2019 Idea House, Southern Living set their sights on Crane Island— a charming new development in Florida surrounded by breathtaking marsh views and idyllic live oaks. They brought the extraordinary talents of interior decorator and textile designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas, Historical Concepts’ Jim Strickland and Clay Rokicki, and Riverside Custom Homes to the coastal community of Amelia Island. With just six months to complete, the waterfront home was built from the ground up but holds a built-over-time feel with subtle touches of Victorian-inspired architecture. Discover how Heather incorporated our fixtures throughout and shop the lighting looks in each space!
Heather anchored the entryway with a trio of Lorford Smoke Bell Lanterns by Chapman & Myers, which are “appropriate for the Lowcountry,” she says. “Mercury glass feels old and a little fancy too.”
The Pondview Medium Jar Lantern by AERIN hangs from a wooden beam above a skirted table. For Heather, this fabric served as a road map for the home's classic blue-and-white scheme.
A group of Urban Renewal Mini Pendants (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) hangs above the kitchen. “They look as elegant and sophisticated as the panels of wallpaper,” Heather says.
“It’s okay to be a bit louder in here as long as it relates to the rest of the house,” advises Heather, who incorporated the Hulton Sconces in Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass by Thomas O'Brien against a bold wallpaper.
A pair of Lambay Table Lamps in Ice Blue Porcelain by Chapman & Myers complement the traditional form of the handmade mahogany bed. The Westminster 3 Light Pendant (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) glows in the evening against the canopy made of Heather's own Grand Frond textile in Olive.
Heather combined ambient — Westminster 3 Light Pendant (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) — , task — Addison Medium Table Lamp and Hackney Floor Lamp — and accent lighting — Kassel Single Sconce — to give the master sitting space a layered look and functional feel.
If possible, separate the master bedroom from the rest of the house so that “overnight guests feel free to congregate as they please,” she advises.
A pair of Radford Small Sconces in Natural Brass and Natural Rift Oak by Ralph Lauren illuminates each vanity. “Giving a couple their own separate sinks with storage beneath is a game changer,” says Heather. The O'Connor Chandelier's Alabaster shade conjures up serenity above the freestanding statement tub.
Fresh clippings (ferns and fronds with woody stems that hold up) are one of Heather's signature tricks for turning little details into big standouts, saying “I prefer using cuttings from the yard over formal arrangements."
The Verdigris finish of the Brantley Lanterns by Suzanne Kasler contributes a vintage, casual feel down the upstairs hall. Heather loves a touch of patina in every room, saying, "It brings so much character into a space.” Illuminated by the 18" Cabinet Maker's Picture Lights by Chapman & Myers, she placed a pair of large bird paintings along the hallway as an ode to the location.
Neutrals reign in this well-lit bunk room. For Heather, the Graves Pivoting Sconces by Suzanne Kasler were an essential amenity, allowing each guest to have an individual night-light. The Gilded Iron leaves atop the Gramercy Mini Chandelier by Chapman & Myers accentuate the room's safari-inspired feel, while the Crystal silhouette of the Terri Large Round Table Lamp by Thomas O'Brien injects a dash glamour between the built-in bunks.
The Hooper 2 - Light Wall Sconce (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) shines above a skirted sink, which Heather incorporated to add a little frill to the space.
Whether you have planned or unexpected visitors, Heather suggests to be ready at all times, saying “always keep beds made, and try to have fresh flowers in the house. If you’re organized and at ease, then your company will be too.” The Wyatt Accent Lamp by Suzanne Kasler illuminates the shared nightstand, the Westminister 3 - Light Pendant (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) anchors the traditional feel from above and the Studio Adjustable Floor Lamp provides task lighting beside the chair.
A pair of Marlborough Single Sconces by Chapman & Myers flank an ornate shell mirror, lending feminine flair to the neutral nook.
“I love a room with painted trim. It reminds me of Colonial Williamsburg houses,” says Virginia-born Heather. A pair of Yue Double Gourd Table Lamps by Chapman & Myers illuminate the nightstands, while the Paulo Small Bracket Lights by Thomas O'Brien and the Westminister 3 - Light Pendant (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com) provide light above the bed.
The Ice Blue Porcelain finish of the Yue Double Gourd Table Lamp adds another soothing shade of blue to the calming space.
"Express your wild side in smaller spaces,” says Heather. The Pimlico Single Light by Chapman & Myers was installed in the guest bedroom’s adjoining bath, papered with a blue-and-white pattern.
For this cozy mother-in-law suite above the garage, Heather created a serene place for extended-stay guests. She looped a pair of tassels—one of her signature style moves— around the Sawyer Table Lamp by Alexa Hampton, adding traditional warmth against the cool colored walls.
For this upstairs space, Heather designed a playroom for all ages. She opted for two L-shaped banquettes—featuring the Anette Single Sconces by Ralph Lauren—instead of the ubiquitous sofa, saying “They don’t need as much fluffing or maintenance as sofas.”
“Pets live well in my house,” says Heather, so it was important for the mudroom to be accommodating and functional for furry friends. She added a pot filler for easy water bowl refills, and incorporated bench storage and hooks for everything under the sun. The Polished Nickel finish of the Precision Small Pendant by Kelly Wearstler gives the space a touch of fun formality.
For a home with nine beds near the ocean, having two washers and dryers in the laundry room was a crucial amenity. Heather selected the Longacre Sconce by Thomas O'Brien and Huntsville 3 - Light Lantern (available for purchase on clarksonlighting.com), and chose a slate counter to match the floor, saying “There’s such a softness to the look, and it hides dirt well.”
