Coastal Living teamed up with interior designer Mark D. Sikes, A. Tesa Architecture and Horan Building Company to design their 2017 Idea House in historic Newport, Rhode Island. The bay-front home is bursting with bright ideas, timeless style and New England charm.
Best known for his classic American style, Mark D. Sikes showcased his signature blue and white color palette throughout the home. The entry, stairway and center halls were outfitted in a custom stripe wallpaper and timeless Plantation Small Lanterns by Chapman & Myers.
Bronze light fixtures bring casual appeal throughout the bright kitchen. Marine Medium Flush Mounts by Chapman & Myers dot the ceiling overhead while a trio of Patrick Medium Pendants by Thomas O’Brien (discontinued) light the butcher-block-topped island.
Don’t forget the fifth wall! The Milton Road Flush Mount by Thomas O’Brien (installed as a pendant) complimented medallion-print wallpaper covering the ceiling of the butler’s pantry.
The spacious living room looks out to breathtaking waterfront views. Sikes tied in the bronze finishes used in the kitchen with the Paulo Floor Light and Mia Floor Lamp by Thomas O’Brien. The Wells Table Lamp by Alexa Hampton (discontinued) lives in harmony with the blue and white color scheme.
The entertaining opportunities are endless in the basement game room, complete with navy-felted pool table. Banquettes lit by six Classic Swing Arm Wall Lamps by Studio VC maximize the seating space – and the fun!
Next to the game room is a comfy media room, perfect for gathering to watch a movie or Netflix binge. The lighting includes a Gannet Table Lamp by AERIN, Naomi Floor Lamps by Ralph Lauren (discontinued) beside the sofa and a Mia Table Lamp by Thomas O’Brien on the console.
In the kids’ room, Sikes selected a buffalo check wallpaper and daybeds for a lounge-like feel. He finished with youthful artwork and lighting, including Ashcroft Sconces (discontinued) and the Modern Table Lamp by Ralph Lauren Home.
Lighter blue hues were introduced in the master bedroom and accented by warm brass lighting and framed art. The Enrico Table Lamp (discontinued) by Thomas O’Brien provides task light at the desk. A pair of Triple Swing Arm Wall Lamps by Studio VC flank the bed for evening reading.
Sunlight fills the third-floor loft, where Sikes planned the home office/studio space. The Goodman Table Lamp by Thomas O’Brien sits atop a white desk and the Cornice Large Lantern by Chapman & Myers hangs from the center point of the slanted ceiling.
